During internal conflicts, the moai were toppled, and in 1960, a tsunami caused by an earthquake off the coast of Chile swept through the site, pushing the statues inland. In the 1990s, a multidisciplinary team led by Chilean archaeologists, in collaboration with members of the Rapanui community and with support from the Japanese company Tadano, carried out a restoration that returned the moai to their original positions.

Experience Ahu Toŋariki for yourself

Visiting Ahu Toŋariki is more than just seeing ancient stone statues, it’s stepping into a deep and powerful story.
