Tour A & B: Two Unique Ways to Discover Rapa Nui with Local Guides

With over 12 years of experience offering tours on Rapa Nui, at Easter Island Travel, we’ve learned that this island is not just meant to be seen — it’s meant to be felt. Every archaeological site, every sculpture, and every landscape holds centuries of history, symbolism, and spirituality. That’s why our tours are designed to offer a deep, authentic experience, guided by those who know and love this land.

Today, we’d like to share two of our most requested routes: Tour A – Legendary Journey and Tour B – Megaliths, both of which combine breathtaking landscapes, ancestral history, and the insight of expert local guides.

Tour A – Legendary Journey

An ideal experience for those who want to visit the island’s most iconic sites and understand the development of Rapa Nui civilization — from its origins to its most symbolic rituals. This 6-hour tour invites you to connect with the worldview of the island’s ancient inhabitants through sacred places and unforgettable scenery.

Sites visited:

Anakena: The first Polynesian settlement on the island. This white sand beach, framed by coconut palms and restored moai, is where, according to oral tradition, Hotu Matu‘a — the first ariki (king) of Rapa Nui — arrived.

Te Pito Kura: Home to the largest moai successfully transported from the quarry. Here you’ll also find a volcanic stone known for its magnetic properties — a source of myths and deep symbolism.

Puna Pau: The ancient red scoria quarry where the pukao (moai topknots) were carved. This porous, lightweight, reddish stone symbolized status and power.

Ahu Akivi: A platform with seven moai astronomically aligned and uniquely facing the ocean. They represent the seven explorers sent by Hotu Matu‘a before he settled on the island.

Tahai: A restored ceremonial complex featuring three platforms. Here, you’ll see remnants of ancient buildings and one moai with its eyes restored, offering a powerful visual connection.

Rano Kau: A massive volcanic crater with a stunning inner lake and panoramic views of the sea. It’s part of Rapa Nui National Park and home to a unique ecosystem.

Orongo: A ceremonial village perched on the edge of the Rano Kau crater. It was the site of the Birdman Ritual (Tangata Manu) — a sacred competition that determined the island’s spiritual leader.

Tour B – Megaliths

This tour delves into the monumental remains of the classical period of Rapa Nui culture. You’ll visit ancient clan ceremonial centers, explore their massive structures, and learn about their spiritual and social significance. The tour lasts approximately 6 hours and includes some of the most important archaeological sites on the island.

Sites visited:

Vinapu: A ceremonial platform with architecture reminiscent of Incan stonework — precisely fitted blocks that continue to intrigue archaeologists today.

Hanga Poukura: A coastal site with archaeological remains revealing the presence of an ancient clan. Here you’ll see toppled moai and scattered fragments.

Vaihu: A platform with overturned moai — evidence of the ceremonial collapse caused by social and spiritual changes on the island.

Akahanga: Believed to be the burial place of Hotu Matu‘a, the first ariki. A site rich in symbolism, featuring stone platforms, ancient house remains, and fallen moai.

Rano Raraku: The main quarry where nearly all moai were carved. Walking among these unfinished statues is one of the most powerful experiences on the island. They were carved directly into the volcanic tuff slopes of the crater

Ahu Tongariki: Rapa Nui’s largest ceremonial platform, with 15 restored moai facing the ocean. This site is a powerful symbol of cultural revival after being restored in the 1990s following the 1960 tsunami.
