Today, we want to talk to you about April 29th. Did you know what’s celebrated on this day? The entire world honors International Dance Day — and we hope you won’t forget it again!
On Easter Island, this celebration holds a very special meaning for us. Here, dance is not just art — it’s a living form of storytelling, a way to honor our ancestors and to feel the soul of Rapa Nui in motion.

Dancing in Rapa Nui: More Than Movement, It’s Living Our Heritage
In Rapa Nui, dance is part of our daily life. It’s much more than a performance for visitors , it’s a deeply rooted tradition that shapes our cultural tourism, our festivities, and the pride we carry as a people.
At Easter Island Travel, as a local tour agency in Rapa Nui, we’ve been sharing this profound part of our identity with travelers for years. And what moves us most is witnessing how dance touches hearts, brings people together, and transforms, both those who dance it and those who discover it for the first time.

The Most Iconic Traditional Dances of Rapa Nui
Among all the cultural expressions of the island, dance holds a very special place. Every traditional choreography has its own origin, rhythm, and meaning, and we’re honored to tell you about them from our lived experience as a Rapa Nui family.
One of the most beloved (and my personal favorite!) is the Sau Sau, which has Samoan roots. It arrived on the island and was embraced as our own. Its soft, fluid movements evoke the ocean, love, and sensuality, always bringing smiles.
On the other hand, the Hoko is a powerful dance, similar to the Māori haka. Known for its strength, energy, and group synchronicity, it’s performed during ceremonies and sports events as a proud display of identity and bravery.
And finally, the delicate ꞌAparima combines hip movements and graceful hand gestures that tell stories of love, nature, and everyday life. It’s poetry in motion.

Today, We Celebrate Life Through Dance
On this International Dance Day, from Easter Island Travel we honor our land, our roots, and all the talented individuals who keep these traditions alive.
Dancing in Rapa Nui means feeling the heartbeat of the island beneath your feet. It’s remembering where we come from and showing the world who we truly are.
