Ahu Toŋariki: where the history and soul of Rapa Nui meet

On the southeastern edge of Rapa Nui, facing the vast Pacific Ocean, stands the majestic Ahu Toŋariki, the island’s largest and most iconic ceremonial site. With its 15 impressive moai lined up in perfect formation, this place is not only an archaeological wonder, but also a living testimony to the resilience and spirituality of the Rapanui people.

And the best part? You’ve got us to guide you there.

A legacy that stands the test of time

Ahu Toŋariki was once the main ceremonial center of the Hotu Iti confederation, one of the most important social groups in ancient Rapa Nui. During internal conflicts, the moai were toppled, and in 1960, a tsunami caused by an earthquake off the coast of Chile swept through the site, pushing the statues inland. In the 1990s, a multidisciplinary team led by Chilean archaeologists, in collaboration with members of the Rapanui community and with support from the Japanese company Tadano, carried out a restoration that returned the moai to their original positions.

Many of our visitors go quiet the moment they arrive, as if the place itself invites reflection. Our local guides, like Yenicet, share stories that connect each moai to the Rapanui worldview, making every visit meaningful and unforgettable.

The journey to Ahu Toŋariki often includes stops at places like Rano Raraku, the quarry where most moai were carved, and Anakena, a white sand beach rich in history and known as the birthplace of Rapanui culture.
