A legacy that stands the test of time

Ahu Toŋariki was once the main ceremonial center of the Hotu Iti confederation, one of the most important social groups in ancient Rapa Nui. During internal conflicts, the moai were toppled, and in 1960, a tsunami caused by an earthquake off the coast of Chile swept through the site, pushing the statues inland. In the 1990s, a multidisciplinary team led by Chilean archaeologists, in collaboration with members of the Rapanui community and with support from the Japanese company Tadano, carried out a restoration that returned the moai to their original positions.
