Light through the two ocean openings of Ana Kakenga lava cave

Ana Kakenga

Locals nicknamed it the two-window cave: a branching tube that ends in dramatic skylights over the coast. Roots drip through the ceiling; the floor can be slippery.

Use a headlamp, watch your head on low basalt, and never visit alone if you are unsure of the route. Some sections may be closed after heavy rain.

Caves like this were used historically for shelter and storage; today they remind us how porous the border between “wild” landscape and domestic life could be on a small island.
